Kalanchoe eriophylla, commonly known as 'Fukurokuro' or 'Woolly Flower Crassula', belongs to the Sedum family. It originates from central Madagascar, growing on rocks. This particular succulent, dressed in a snow-white fuzzy coat, is highly distinctive among its Rabbit Ear relatives. The leaves grow in opposite pairs along the stem, shaped like elongatedζ’ε½’ (suΕ xΓng - shuttle shape). The entire leaf and stem are covered in dense white fuzz. New leaves are small and white, while mature leaves reveal more pronounced green tones. Older leaves may become thinner and darker, which is a normal phenomenon. If you see a plant that is entirely white, with short, fine fuzz, no serrated leaf edges, and a slight golden-yellow hue at the leaf tips, it's a 'Fukurokuro'!
Native to the high plateau regions of Namibia, 'Fukurokuro' thrives in environments with plenty of sunlight, requiring partial shade during the summer to avoid excessive heat. It prefers warmth, and winter temperatures should not drop below 10Β°C. Growth is slow, resulting in a compact plant with branching.
Growing Environment
Like most succulents, 'Fukurokuro' dislikes overly humid and hot conditions. To ensure healthy growth, maintaining good ventilation is paramount. Using a specialized succulent soil mix (primarily granular) will also significantly increase your chances of successful cultivation.
Sunlight
Can 'Fukurokuro' be grown indoors? If you desire a beautiful plant with vibrant color changes and a compact form, it's best to place it outdoors where it can receive adequate sunlight for photosynthesis. Insufficient light can lead to etiolation, where the leaves stretch apart, creating a loose, sprawling shape, weakening the stem, and causing the leaves to droop. Plants grown in ample sunlight will be short and stout, with tightly packed leaves that feel firm and lively to the touch. A simple test for a healthy 'Fukurokuro' is to gently pinch a leaf; a plump, firm, and elastic leaf indicates good health. Remember to let it bask in the sun!
Watering
Watering frequency depends on your specific growing environment. If your plant is in a well-ventilated outdoor location, watering 1-2 times a week, ensuring water drains from the bottom holes, is ideal. If you're unsure about your environment's ventilation, use a wooden skewer to check if the soil is dry before watering. If the soil dries out within a week, water once a week. If it takes two weeks to dry, water every two weeks. If the soil remains wet for over two weeks, it suggests the environment is too damp, and you may need to consider repotting or changing the location. Avoid prolonged exposure to rain, as this can lead to rot, and the white fuzz may not dry easily.
Propagation
'Fukurokuro' can be propagated through stem cuttings or division. Stem cuttings are straightforward: take a healthy mature stem, allow it to dry, and then plant it in slightly moist sandy soil. Roots should develop within 15 to 30 days in a cool, ventilated area. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for propagation.
Summer & Winter Care
When summer temperatures exceed 35Β°C, 'Fukurokuro' growth largely stagnates. During this period, reduce watering to prevent root rot from overly moist soil. Enhance ventilation and provide partial shade to protect from intense sunlight.
In winter, 'Fukurokuro' can tolerate temperatures as low as -2Β°C when the soil is dry, provided it is an indoor environment (not outdoors). Watering should be significantly reduced throughout winter, with a gradual cessation of watering below 5Β°C.
Repotting
As it grows relatively slowly, repotting every 2-4 years is sufficient. Repot in early spring, just before the first watering of the season.
π Key Care Tips: Well-ventilated environment, ample sunlight, well-draining soil, water thoroughly when dry, approximately once a week.
