A Rare, Century-Old, One-of-a-Kind French Brass Mechanical Date Stamp from the Mozart Association (1920-39)
If you often watch European and American series set in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, you've likely heard the distinct, loud impression of these mechanical date stamps.
The stamp indicates its affiliation with the Association Mozart, with the date range spanning 1920-39. The bottom bears the organization's address. These mechanical date stamps were custom-made, and the engravings of the time and organization name made them unique. Therefore, this is presumed to be a singular piece. Its body features a boxwood handle paired with a mechanical brass stamping mechanism.
Imagine placing this exceptional, century-old artifact atop a piano at home; it would be a truly unique decorative piece.
The date stamp is fully functional. It has an ink pad at the top. You can open the locking valve of the stamp head to add ink.
After inking, the mechanical retraction mechanism allows you to pivot the stamp face to the ink pad for blotting before making an impression. There's a deliberate notch on the handle to help distinguish the front.
Describing it may sound abstract, but operating it feels incredibly cool. It has two rollers on the side; one is a fixed roller with no function, while the other allows you to adjust the month. However, the year and specific day cannot be turned but can be manually adjusted. It is a mechanical construction, and understanding its full mechanical operation might require disassembly and study. However, I was concerned about potentially damaging it or being unable to reassemble it, so I didn't delve deeper. Regardless, it can be adjusted and used for stamping just as I've described.
