He excelled at expressing inner peace through scenes of solitude. "Autumn Dusk in the Mountains" depicts his feelings of secluded life in the mountains and the serene beauty of the mountain landscape after rain, conveying a state of mind that doesn't compete with the world and calmly observes all things. He is hailed by later generations as the first person with "poetry in painting, and painting in poetry," a representative of Eastern tranquil aesthetics.
