Echinocereus subinermis, also known as the Great Buddha Hall cactus, is an intriguing specimen.
It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Echinocereus genus, and is native to northern Mexico (southern Sonora, western Chihuahua, northern Sinaloa). The genus name Echinocereus is derived from the Greek word "echinos" (hedgehog) and the Latin word "cereus" (candle), referring to the spiny, candle-shaped flower tubes of this genus, resembling a hedgehog. The stems are succulent, tubular or columnar, reaching 10-20cm in height and about 7-9cm in diameter. They have 5-11 ribs, usually straight, but sometimes spiraled. The stems are dark green, turning purplish-red on the ribs and stem tips under strong sunlight and cold temperatures. The areoles on the ribs are white, typically with one central spine or none, and usually 3-8 radial spines, about 0.5cm long.
| Flowering |
Flowers emerge from areoles near the stem tip. The sepals are spiny, and the flowers are large and distinctly yellow, with a diameter of about 10-12cm. The stamen column is green. Each flower can last up to 5 days, with the blooming season from late spring to summer. It takes about 4-5 years from sowing to flowering. In early summer, it produces stunningly beautiful yellow cactus flowers. The intensity of the yellow is indescribable, both elegant and luxurious, bringing warmth and great joy.
| Care Instructions |
The Great Buddha Hall cactus is robust and relatively easy to cultivate. It tolerates some shade but dislikes persistently damp soil. Avoid frequent watering in winter. It prefers light shade to direct morning sunlight, approximately a half-day sun environment. It thrives in well-draining media. During the summer growing season, it appreciates more water. After entering dormancy in winter, water should be reduced. It is said to tolerate temperatures down to -2Β°C, but it's advisable to provide some protection during severe cold snaps by moving it indoors until the cold weather passes.
π Key Care Points: Drought-tolerant, water thoroughly when dry, water once a week, prefers sunlight, good ventilation, good drainage.
