Product Description

A Dictionary of Taiwanese Loanwords Tâi-gí-im Gōa-lâi-gí Sû-tián Loanwords in Taiwanese Bilingual Taiwanese and Mandarin Explanations Compiled by Chang Kuang-Yu First Edition 2005, 1640 pages ISBN:9579862389 Hardcover This is currently the most comprehensive dictionary of Taiwanese loanwords! Mr. Chang Kuang-Yu, the author, is the twin brother of Professor Chang Yu-Hong (author of "TJ Concise Taiwanese Dictionary" and "TJ Chinese-Taiwanese Dictionary"). After modern Taiwanese came into contact with foreign languages, it absorbed many words, yet very few dictionaries have systematically organized and recorded them. Because most Taiwanese dictionaries rely on Chinese characters for collection and organization, this dictionary breaks free from the constraints of Chinese characters, using Taiwanese Romanization as the primary language for its entries. It comprehensively supplements and records our vocabulary. For example, it includes terms like "kho͘-lé-lah" and "o͘-lín-gió" mentioned in Chen Lei's "Hsiang Shih Pu Chi," and "sò͘-tà," "khăn-jió," and others found in "Selected Taiwanese Literature by Chen Ming-Jen." This volume contains 28,000 entries of Taiwanese loanwords, including those personally observed or heard by the compiler, oral loanwords, written (Chinese character) loanwords, multilingual mixed words, and commonly used abbreviations. Except for special cases, proper nouns such as personal names, place names, company names, and brand names are not included. The main text is arranged alphabetically according to the Pe̍h-ōe-jī order and is divided into 22 sections. Each entry lists the etymology, source, explanation, and the period of its emergence. The front of the book includes detailed notes, and some parts of the main text feature diagrams and charts. The back of the book contains image explanations, a list of major references, and an index of Chinese characters by stroke count. Note: If you require a digital file of errata revised by the original author, please send us a message to request it separately.
