**Whale Shark**
Commonly known as the "tofu shark," the whale shark is currently the largest fish in the world. The largest recorded whale shark measured 12.65 meters long and weighed 21.5 metric tons, with potentially larger individuals yet to be confirmed. Despite their immense size, whale sharks possess a very gentle disposition and are often observed interacting playfully with divers.
Whale sharks have few natural predators in the ocean, and human fishing activities are the primary cause of their population decline. Several seasonal aggregation sites for whale sharks (such as in the waters of the Philippines, Maldives, China, and other countries) were once hotspots for fisheries. Humans primarily consume whale shark meat and liver oil, and sometimes their fins are cut off to make shark fin soup. Overfishing has pushed whale sharks to the brink of extinction, and many countries have now explicitly prohibited their capture.
**IUCN Status: Endangered (EN)**
