Guo Xi (active in the 11th century) was a native of Wenxian County, Henan Province. During the Xining reign of Shenzong (AD 1068-1077), he studied art at the Hanlin Academy of Painting and was good at landscape painting. He is the author of "Linquan Gaozhi", an important treatise on landscape painting in the history of Chinese painting. The main scenery of this painting is concentrated on the central axis. There are big rocks and giant pine trees in the close-up, and the twisting rocks in the middle-ground are connected behind them. Through the clouds and mist, two peaks protrude in the distance, standing in the middle, facing the abyss. There are majestic things in the deep mountains. of palaces and pavilions. The flat slope on the left is winding, which makes people feel that it is both deep and far away. The author uses thick and twisted lines to depict the outline of the rocks, and then uses dry and wet ink colors of different shades to rub out the texture of the rock surface layer by layer. Because the shape resembles curled clouds, it is called "cirrus cloud chapping". The branches of the trees are curved, and the branches look like stretched out fingers and palms, which are called "crab claw branches". This is a characteristic inherited from the Li Cheng lineage in the early Song Dynasty. The artist on the left side of the painting inscribed himself: "Early spring. Painted by Guo Xi in the year of Renzi (1072 AD)." As the name suggests, this painting describes the scene of early spring when the auspicious snow melts, the clouds change, the earth revives, and the vegetation sprouts branches.
