The male's mandibles have been enlarged by evolution beyond any useful size for eating — so large and heavy that a big male actually has difficulty feeding itself — and they exist entirely for fighting other males over territory and females. I wanted the drawing to show them at full extension, pointing forward the way they do when two males meet and lock together on the surface of a log. The stag beetle is one of the largest insects in Europe: the biggest males reach eight centimetres, including the mandibles. They are also among the longest-lived of European insects: the larva spends three to seven years underground eating rotting wood — the heavy, slow work of decomposition — and emerges as an adult for just a few weeks in early summer. The adult does not eat solid food at all. It drinks tree sap, and it exists for one season only, to find a mate. After that it is finished. They are most active at dusk and after dark, and the sound of a large male flying is surprisingly loud — a heavy, lumbering drone, more like a small aircraft than a beetle. In the UK they are protected and in decline; in many parts of continental Europe they are still found commonly in old-growth woodland with plenty of standing dead wood. I drew a male at rest, mandibles open, lit from the side so the sculptural quality of the thorax and elytra reads clearly.
