▰▰▰▰▰▰AMITA▰▰▰▰▰▰
Founded in Kobe in 1932, Amita re-established its Damascene factory in Kyoto in 1946 after World War II. In 1952, the Japanese government officially designated Amita Damascene Co., Ltd. as an export retailer (duty-free shop), producing many items for export to the West. This allowed the proprietor to acquire some Japanese pieces from Western collections.
The art of metal inlay, with origins tracing back over 2000 years to the ancient Syrian capital of Damascus, was later introduced to the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal) in the early 8th century by the Moors. Around the same period, it also made its way to Japan via the Silk Road.
The technique involves using a base of iron or copper alloy, upon which fine lines are incised. Thin sheets of pure gold and silver are then fashioned into patterns and hammered into these grooves. A process of lacquering and firing prevents oxidation and rust of the base metal, followed by polishing and meticulous micro-engraving. Finally, these elements are set into jewelry.
