■ About Sapphires
Gemstone meanings: Sincerity, nobility, benevolence, the stone of bishops, celestial gem, sky gem, September birthstone.
With a hexagonal crystal system and a hardness of 9 (second only to diamond), finely cut stones are quite valuable. Sapphires are precious gems primarily found in Asia. The name originates from the Latin word "sapphirus," meaning blue, and they are called "celestial gems" or "sky gems" due to their ability to reflect the various colors of the sky throughout the day.
*The sapphires in this piece are of very high clarity. Individual stones may show inclusions (internal cracks, dark spots, etc.).
【Bonus Column: Sapphire, the Navel of the World】
Sapphire belongs to the mineral species corundum, composed of aluminum and oxygen. It is found in igneous and metamorphic rocks that do not contain silicon. Do you remember playing as a child, searching for clear sand or small pebbles in the schoolyard? That was silicon. Silicon is abundant in the Earth's crust, making environments devoid of it very rare, typically limited to metamorphic zones of extreme heat and pressure. Around 700 to 500 million years ago, the supercontinent Gondwana existed, and its center formed a zone of intense metamorphism where most of today's continents collided. This created the conditions for the formation of corundum (sapphire) with a Mohs hardness of 9. The continents of Mozambique, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, and India were once joined, and in this rare central environment, metamorphic sapphires were formed (volcanic sapphires also exist). Rather than sapphires originating from various locations, the single place where they formed later dispersed across the world.
Sapphires are, in essence, proof of the Earth's former "navel." Collecting sapphires carries a romance akin to gathering fragments of the Earth. As the Earth's crustal energy has decreased since 700 million years ago, events like the formation of the Gondwana supercontinent may have been a once-in-Earth's-history phenomenon. Within a small, beautiful sapphire lies the pulse of our planet.
