Deep blues and blacks interlace to form elegant, delicate Japanese motifs, revealing subtle, understated luster. At first sight, it immediately recalls Tanizaki Jun’ichirō’s classic line from In Praise of Shadows: "The beauty of us Orientals is often found in shadows. Without shadows, there is no beauty." Despite the rarity and expense of the fabrics, it was cherished and kept for personal collection. Later, encountering a plant-dyed, nearly ink-black tsumugi—like an endless dream—felt like all was complete. The design allows the fabric to speak for itself in the purest way. Either side can take the spotlight; together, they complement each other like soulmates. At the end of the black plant-dyed silk, a white mark appears, shaped like a rounded exclamation point with a fine gold line at its tip. Such marks are usually at the start or end of the fabric and often trimmed during production. Jul’s cherishes this uniqueness—it symbolizes the fabric’s singularity—and deliberately preserves it as a signature of the piece. The end is adorned with hand-polished lapis lazuli, a gemstone historically symbolizing nobility and protection, echoing the serenity and contemplation of Shaded Blue.
