It is a type of mineral, also called moissanite. Its composition is silicon carbide, with the chemical formula SiC. In terms of hardness (Mohs scale), moissanite ranks 9.25 – 9.5, second only to diamond's 10 among gemstones. Furthermore, it is rated higher than diamond in terms of resistance to chipping when a strong force is applied. In terms of brilliance, which determines a gemstone's value, moissanite surpasses diamond. While diamond has a refractive index of 2.42, moissanite's is 2.65 – 2.69.
