French neoclassical style - Faunus, the god of agriculture and pastoralism in Roman mythology, Bronze hollowed-out grapevine pattern, ebony fossil handle hand mirror
Neoclassicism is a retro movement that emerged in the 18th century. On the one hand, Neoclassicism originated from the reflection on the complex art of the previous two generations, "Baroque" and "Rococo", and on the other hand, it believes in reviving the graphic art of ancient Greece and Rome.
The carved image in the middle of the mirror is Faunus, the god of wilderness and agriculture in Roman religion, who is in charge of animals. He is responsible for looking after herds and crops and making them productive. He is a burly man with a human body, goat feet and goat horns on his head. The Romans equated him with the god of nature in Greek mythology.
The surrounding hollow carvings are like unending grape vines, echoing the gods of agriculture and animal husbandry. Paired with the precious thousand-year-old ebony fossil handle, it is a beautiful design combination that is very classic.
In fact, in the meaning of European decorative patterns, Faunus also has the symbol of warding off evil and avoiding danger, just like the Mascaron reliefs on European churches.
Ebony is a carbonized wood that has been buried underground for thousands of years. In Europe from the 17th to the 19th century, it was a material that was no less valuable than pure silver. Therefore, some precious pure silver tableware is paired with ebony handles.
Year: 1800 or so
Size: Length including handle 32cm
It is in good condition, the lenses have been updated, and the original screws on the back are intact, but as an antique of about 200 years, it is inevitable that there are traces of history. Only those who can accept it should buy it.
