Cinnabar, also known as 辰砂, 丹砂, 赤丹, or 汞沙, is mercuric sulfide ranging from vermilion to brick red. Historically, cinnabar was also a source for refining vermilion or bright red pigments. Its color and properties stem from a hexagonal crystal system within the trigonal crystal class, with crystals sometimes exhibiting twinning. For instance, the natural pigments used in Thangka painting traditionally incorporate precious minerals and gemstones such as gold, silver, pearls, agate, coral, turquoise, malachite, and cinnabar, alongside plants like saffron, rhubarb, and indigo for color and embellishment.
Cinnabar is generally divided into two types: Purple Gold Cinnabar with visible crystals, and Imperial Red Cinnabar. The red hues of these two differ slightly. Purple Gold Cinnabar presents a deeper red compared to Imperial Red Cinnabar, and it also features the distinct cinnabar crystals characteristic of Imperial Red, making it favored by many. Imperial Red Cinnabar has fewer visible crystals internally, boasts a rich, full vermilion color, and its hue is more refined. It is also priced higher than Purple Gold Cinnabar.
Cinnabar Care
The primary component of cinnabar is mercuric sulfide, but it often contains impurities like realgar and apatite, which are susceptible to dissolving and decolorizing upon contact with water. Furthermore, prolonged immersion in water can cause cinnabar to disintegrate if its texture is loose. Therefore, when wearing cinnabar, it is best to avoid contact with water. Cinnabar should also be kept away from direct flame, as burning will cause it to turn black. Additionally, heating cinnabar above 180 degrees Celsius in the presence of oxygen can lead to partial oxidation and the release of a small amount of mercury.
