Edward John Poynter (1836-1919) was a British painter, designer, and former president of the Royal Academy of Arts. He became famous in one fell swoop with "The Israelites in Egypt" painted in 1867. He was Slade Professor of Fine Art at University College London from 1871 to 1875, and Director of the National Gallery from 1894 to 1904. He officially became a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1876, took over as president in 1896, was knighted in the same year, received an honorary degree from Cambridge University in 1898, and was made a baronet on July 24, 1902. Engraved on the nameplate: (upper left) "Mar.4,80".
