KAVALAN: 3952 Lao Shanyao - Natural Lacquer Pen (Maki-e Series). The multi-layered coating of handcrafted natural lacquer, with its red and black maki-e technique, creates patterns reminiscent of a red and black koi fish, lifelike and unique. This special technique results in variations in pattern for each pen, making every piece one-of-a-kind and a treasured collectible. The natural lacquer body possesses a unique warmth, smooth and precious like jade, with a simple yet beautiful aesthetic that makes it irresistible to hold. The pen is complemented by gunmetal gray electroplated fittings and a special spring-loaded clip design.
The nib is a German Bock #250 (#6) standard titanium nib, meticulously handcrafted and adjusted by Lao Shanyao artisans into a calligraphy-style nib capable of producing varying line widths. It offers a unique brush-like character and a distinctive feel, with more elasticity than typical steel calligraphy nibs. For inquiries about changing nib types or modifying to a knife-edge nib, please message the designer directly to discuss, thank you. (Note: Different nib replacements may incur price differences, with potential increases or decreases in cost).
**Gift Set Includes: German SCHMIDT K2 Converter (ink not included) + One exquisite strap-style pen pouch (design shipped randomly) + 3952 Lao Shanyao wooden gift box packaging.**
Dimensions: 148mm length, 15.9mm cap diameter, 14.1mm barrel diameter, 130mm barrel length including nib, approximately 43 grams weight.
Hand-ground and Adjusted Calligraphy Nib:
1. For the calligraphy nib, it is recommended to initially use an ink dropper to fill the pen and write (do not remove the converter installed in the pen body to prevent ink backflow). After a period of adaptation, use the converter to fill and write.
2. The calligraphy nib is crafted by modifying an EF nib into a curved tip that produces varying line widths not solely through pressure, but by the angle of the pen. Utilize the curvature of the nib tip to achieve different line thicknesses. Holding the pen upright results in less contact area between the nib and paper, producing finer lines. A more inclined angle or slight pressure increases the contact area, yielding thicker lines. The ability to write thick or thin lines depends on your dexterity (each nib has a limit to the pressure it can withstand; avoid excessive force to prevent damage or misalignment. It is advisable to place a writing pad under the paper when writing).
In consideration of environmental protection, we do not proactively provide paper bags. If a gift bag is required, please indicate this in the order notes after purchase, thank you.
Images are for reference only. Some photos may have slight color discrepancies due to lighting and angles; the actual product prevails.
Note: Regularly wipe and maintain the inside of the pen body and cap. When storing, do not keep the nib facing downwards for extended periods.
Friendly Reminder: Avoid pressing down or writing with the nib skewed to the left or right (for right-handed users, it is recommended to hold the pen so the nib points towards the 10 or 11 o'clock position). This prevents accidental misalignment of the iridium tip, which can cause scratching or ink flow issues. The nib should be rinsed with clean water regularly to prevent ink buildup and blockages that may affect writing quality.
