Hong Kong Island, a land with many mountains and little flat land, has seen its development from its early years mainly concentrated in the Victoria Harbor area in the north. Reclamation has caused the coastline to move northward many times, and the streets in various districts have also undergone great changes. This detailed street map of Hong Kong drawn by "Popular Practical Series Publishing Company" in 1968 shows that the main streets at that time were concentrated in Wan Chai, Central and Sheung Wan. The Central area was dotted with government facilities such as the then Government House and the Zoological and Botanical Gardens. The more fragmented and dense neighborhoods in Sheung Wan were unique to the Chinese-inhabited area at the time. After experiencing a large-scale plague in 1894, it became Hong Kong's public Starting point for health and urban planning. As for the waterfront area, the dense piers were the distribution center for north-south traffic and the rice industry. They were an important mark of Hong Kong's status as an entrepot trade port at that time.
