Guanshiyin Bodhisattva of a Thousand Hands and Eyes, Song Dynasty, Mini Scroll

Collection description Vast expanse of waves, auspicious clouds emerge, the four heavenly kings hold the Seven Jewels Lotus Platform on their backs, and the Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva stands on top of it in majestic form. The accompanying Bodhisattvas on both sides either put their hands together and bowed, or held magical instruments, accompanying them. The Bodhisattva has mustaches both above and below his lips, which shows that he is a man. However, his delicate eyebrows and gentle face already have the charm of a woman. This scroll does not have the author's signature. The outlines of the characters and the lines of the clothes are all drawn with a center stroke. The brush strokes are smooth and agile. The decoration of the Yingluo and the jewels inlaid on the Seven Treasures Lotus Platform are carefully drawn. The colors are beautiful but not gaudy. It is truly a masterpiece of Buddhist painting in the Southern Song Dynasty.
