Shuifei Sand, Imperial Sand, Purple Gold Sand, and Crystal Sand are all high-content quality cinnabar. Their **main differences lie in color, texture, hardness, and production methods**.
**「Shuifei Sand」**
**True red, with a slight orange undertone. The surface has a warm, matte finish that becomes brighter with wear, forming a patina.**
The production method involves repeatedly grinding fine cinnabar particles into a paste, stirring with water, allowing it to settle, collecting the upper "turbid liquid," and then letting it settle again (the water-grinding purification method). The bottom cinnabar mud is air-dried and then pressed using ancient methods. Even on the cross-section, uniform, fine mineral sparkle particles can be seen.
**「Imperial Sand」**
**The color is closer to true red, with a brighter hue and higher hardness.**
The production method involves multiple processes such as **crushing/grinding/magnetic separation/water-grinding/high polishing** from natural raw cinnabar ore, gradually purifying it, and then pressing it using ancient methods. Imperial Sand has almost no mineral sparkle on the surface, but has it internally. The surface uses a **high-polishing** process to achieve a metallic luster, especially under sunlight, where the metallic feel is maximized.
**「Purple Gold Sand」**
**The color is purplish-red, and the hardness is slightly lower than Imperial Sand.**
The production method involves multiple processes such as **crushing/grinding/screening** from natural raw cinnabar ore, but **without water-grinding purification**. Therefore, the surface is not as fine and has small, scattered mineral sparkle particles, giving a "starry sky" effect.
**「Crystal Sand」**
**The color is purplish-red and translucent.**
Large cinnabar particles are directly chipped from cinnabar ore. The crystal particles are clearly visible on the surface, and under light, each particle is transparent, emitting a fluorescent red glow.

**> Cinnabar**
In the earliest documented records, cinnabar was referred to by a single character, "丹" (dān). "丹" is an ideogram. Ancient miners dug wells, and extracted minerals from within. Thus, the character "丹" is actually the character "井" (jǐng, well) with a dot in the middle, signifying that a mine shaft was dug and something was extracted from it – this something was cinnabar.
Because cinnabar is red, mostly a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, cinnabar was called "朱砂" (zhūshā). "丹" and "朱" describe the color, and "砂" describes the shape, meaning irregular granular minerals.
The color of cinnabar is unfading. Chinese calligraphy and painting are called "丹青" (dānqīng), where "丹" refers to cinnabar. An indispensable component of inkstones, the "Eight Treasures Ink Paste," also has cinnabar as its main ingredient.
From a Feng Shui perspective, cinnabar is collected from minerals that gather the essence of the sun and moon, absorbing the positive energy of heaven and earth. Therefore, cinnabar possesses a very strong positive magnetic field. We can observe that jade feels cool to the touch, while cinnabar feels warm when held.
Since ancient times, cinnabar has been used in Taoist rituals such as drawing talismans, consecration, warding off evil, and suppressing malevolent influences. Cinnabar has always been regarded as a supreme item for enhancing luck, transforming fortune, suppressing evil, driving away spirits, attracting blessings, and accumulating wealth. It carries auspicious meanings of great fortune, prosperity, and well-being.
The "Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing" (Classic of Materia Medica) lists cinnabar as a superior herb, often used in medicinal treatments for calming the spirit, detoxifying, and alleviating insomnia and excessive dreaming.
Living in modern times, owning one or two cinnabar artifacts can also cultivate one's character and nurture the eyes and heart.
**> Identification**
**All cinnabar products in our store are high-content cinnabar with a strong sense of weight. You can use the following methods for identification:**
>. Burning cinnabar will turn it black. (Please heat it through an intermediary. It is generally not recommended to burn it directly on finished products, as controlling the time and area is difficult. If it turns black after prolonged heating, it cannot be restored.)
>. Real cinnabar can draw orange-red lines on paper. (To avoid damaging the appearance of the finished product, please choose an inconspicuous area to draw the line, or use the complimentary bead to draw the line.)
**> Care**
**If cinnabar jewelry does not have metal or plant-based components (such as wood, bamboo, bodhi seeds, etc.), it can be lightly exposed to water, but prolonged soaking is not suitable as it will affect the luster.**
**Braided cord styles are not recommended to get wet. After washing, they should be air-dried before wearing, as damp cords can carry moisture, which is not ideal for the body.**
1. Avoid Corrosion
Cinnabar is a mineral and is insoluble in water, but frequent contact with chemicals such as soap and shower gel can corrode cinnabar.
2. Avoid Contact with Metal Objects
The mineral elements in cinnabar can absorb metal ions, causing irreversible dulling and blackening of the cinnabar.
3. Avoid High Temperatures
The mercuric sulfide in cinnabar only releases at temperatures of 380 degrees Celsius. Therefore, as long as cinnabar jewelry is kept away from high-temperature environments, it can be worn with confidence.
4. Avoid Collisions with Hard or Sharp Objects
Cinnabar has high hardness but is brittle, so be careful to prevent drops.
5. How to Clean
If you find that the cinnabar is dirty, do not soak it in water, as this will alter its original luster! You can wipe it a few times with a slightly damp cotton cloth, and it will be fine after a period of time.
6. Oiling for Maintenance
Apply a layer of white tea oil or olive oil to the finished product, allowing the surface to absorb the oil, making it more lustrous and clear. If applying oil, seal it in a brocade box, and you can wrap it in a layer of plastic wrap to prevent the oil from staining the brocade box lining.
7. Frequent Handling
Frequently handle the cinnabar jewelry worn on your body with your hands, allowing the surface to absorb a thin layer of oil, which will make it appear more antique and elegant over time.
The actual item is more exquisite and beautiful than the photos.
