You might wonder how free-hand embroidery differs from standard machine embroidery. In standard machine embroidery, a machine reads an embroidery pattern and automatically stitches it, resulting in perfectly uniform and identical designs. In contrast, free-hand embroidery is a skilled craft where an artisan manually guides the fabric to create the design. Each piece is unique, with a texture reminiscent of hand embroidery. The process involves transferring an outline to the fabric and, while referring to the original artwork, the artisan stitches in sync with the needle's up-and-down motion – a truly remarkable skill to even imagine. Currently, there are only about 400 people in Vietnam capable of free-hand embroidery. Of these, merely 50 can perform it professionally. Furthermore, only 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of embroidery certification. Among them, just 10 possess the expertise to execute Pangandaran's challenging designs. However, exceptional skill alone is not enough; embroidery requires artistic flair. Subtle nuances can significantly alter the overall impression. This is why we entrust Pangandaran's embroidery to Hun, an artisan of the highest caliber. Hun, currently 46 years old, has been honing this craft since the age of 15, boasting 31 years of dedicated experience. His artistic sensibility is truly outstanding, earning him our complete trust. With Vietnam's recent economic development, traditional crafts, like many others, face a challenging landscape. Since 2000, the number of free-hand embroiderers has been rapidly declining. While schools once existed, now master artisans train apprentices. Hun has trained four individuals, but he notes that younger generations are not pursuing this craft. Rapid economic growth has sidelined traditional handwork, and the number of artisans is expected to decrease further. This trend is accelerating even more rapidly than in Japan, and without systemic support, Vietnamese free-hand embroidery is on the brink of disappearing within the next decade or so.
