The base is ecru and then dyed with black (dark grey). The result is a vertical striped pattern with a hand-drawn look. *Itajime was originally used to dye silk threads used to tie obi sashes on Japanese kimonos. A carver carves stripes or other patterns into a hard board such as Mizume Sakura, and a dyer sandwiches thread or fabric between them, compressing it and dyeing it.
