SANYU (1901-1966) was born in Shunqing (today's Nanchong) of the Sichuan Province, China. In his hometown, the young SANYU learned Chinese calligraphy with Zhao Xi (1877-1938) and his father taught him traditional Chinese painting. In 1921 he went to France to pursue advanced studies in art, opening up a different artistic life for himself.SANYU's works combine qualities of Chinese literati painting and the Western art, a combination that evolves into his unique style of expression. SANYU's subjects ranged from figure painting to still life, animals and landscape, and he worked various media such as pencil, watercolor and oil. The National Museum of History collection of SANYU's works, 49 pieces of oil paintings and 3 pieces of drawing,represent his substantial achievement from the late phase of his artistic career, making NMH one of the important museums with collection of SANYU's late works.
