“We can only see half of life, the other half is what others cannot see.”
Yi Yi is a 2000 Taiwanese film directed by Edward Yang. The story revolves around the everyday lives of a middle-class Taipei family, told from the perspectives of different family members and relatives. It touches on themes of family, love, youth, and the meaning of life. The film is regarded as the final installment of Yang’s “Taipei Trilogy,” honored at international festivals, and often hailed as one of the greatest films of the 21st century.
What first drew me to this film was the feeling of living through the slow rhythm of daily life, seen through the eyes of others. I especially love Yang-Yang and Mr. Ota—both carry a gaze that seems to savor life itself.
It actually took me a long time to finish writing about this film for the sticker project—partly because of its importance and the many people who love it. I always felt my words weren’t enough to capture why I cherish it so much. But I guess I shouldn’t keep putting it off any longer, haha.
