Letterpress blocks were used in letterpress printing, which is the oldest form of printing.
When printing, the paper is pressed, resulting in a slightly darker ink impression along the edges of the printed area. Touching the paper with your finger, you can feel the distinct impression mark where the text was printed.
This method involves creating movable individual printing plates for characters, which can be interchanged and combined. Based on the document to be printed, the required typefaces are selected. These metal type blocks are then arranged and assembled to fit the desired layout.
The format of books, the design of typography, and the concepts of graphic design were clearly defined following the advent of letterpress printing.

**Ex Libris bookplate (owl image)**
An Ex Libris bookplate is a printed or decorative label that is pasted inside a book, usually on the endpaper, to indicate ownership. Bookplates often feature motifs related to the book's owner, such as coats of arms, heraldic emblems, badges, mottos, or designs commissioned from artists or designers. The owner's name is typically followed by an inscription such as "Books from the library of..." or "From the collection of...", or the Latin phrase "ex libris," serving as important evidence of a book's provenance.
