Hand-Blown Glass Vase with Pink Flower Pattern by Shizuka Miura

This vase is meticulously crafted using blown glass techniques. The structure consists of three layers: a transparent reddish-pink on the outermost layer, a white layer directly beneath it, and a clear glass base. To create the pattern, I masked the glass sphere and carved it using sandblasting. The piece was then reheated and blown again to its final shape. Because the pink layer shrinks slightly during heating, the white layer beneath creates a beautiful border around the patterns. The patterned areas are slightly raised, corresponding to the thickness of the colored glass. I designed the pink color to have a beautiful gradient from the rim down to the base, where the hue deepens closer to red. The bottom is finished with a flat piece of clear glass for stability. The vase is shaped into a slender teardrop (shizuku) form. Please note that a small amount of pink glass has flowed into the inner rim in one spot (see the 6th photo). The patterns are not mechanically printed; each is hand-drawn or created by manually cutting masking tape, so the lines and shapes possess a natural, hand-drawn charm. The glass is relatively thick and heavy, providing excellent stability even when displaying tall flowers or branches.
