**Large sizes are only available for home delivery.** Artist: Wadsworth A. Jarrell Wadsworth Aikens Jarrell was an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker. Born in Albany, Georgia, he later moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. After graduation, he became deeply involved in the local arts scene, and through his early work he explored the working lives of African Americans in Chicago and made a visual and aural impact on jazz music. In 1968, Wadsworth Jarrell co-founded COBRA (Coalition of Black Revolutionary Artists) with his spouse, fashion designer Jae Jarrell, and artists Barbara Jones-Hogu, Jeff Donaldson, and Gerald Williams. Not only did women play central roles in the prominent Black Arts Movement collective—which would later be renamed AfriCOBRA (African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists )—but they were also iconic leaders in the Black Power Movement. Here Jarrell celebrates the renowned radical activist and intellectual Angela Y. Davis, who continues to be a leader in the fight for racial, gender, and economic justice around the world. Incorporating Davis's words, Black Power slogans, and AfriCOBRA's signature vibrant colors, the portrait depicts the intensity and power of her activism. The portrait combines Davis’ words, the Black Power slogan and AfriCOBRA’s signature vibrant colors to depict the intensity and power of her activism. Wadsworth Jarrell was one of the founders of AfriCOBRA (African Commune of Bad Related Artists), a group of black artists from Chicago's South Side who helped shape the image of the Black Arts Movement. His work has been included in Tate Modern’s acclaimed touring exhibition Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power and the 2019 Venice Biennale. After serving as a company artist in the Army during World War II, Jarrell enrolled in the Art Institute of Chicago in 1958 for his B.F.A. His work is characterized by the use of vibrant "cool" colors, black power slogans and affirmative representations of blackness. His iconic portrait of civil rights activist Angela Y. Davis (Revolutionary, 1972) was based on a photograph of her during a 1970 speech. In Jarrell's account, Davis spoke into the microphone as "love," "black people," and "revolution" seemed to emanate from her mouth. In this painting, Davis appears to be wearing the belt of the Revolutionary Suit (1969), a wearable art piece designed by Jarrell's wife, Jay Jarrell.
