Vaccinium wrightii, an evergreen plant. Scientific name: Vaccinium wrightii Japanese name: Giima, Himeshashanbo A rare plant, with the red-flowered variety being even rarer. Also known as Wright's blueberry or large-leaf blueberry. Native to islands south of Amami Oshima in Japan, coastal mid-altitude mountainous regions in Taiwan, and outlying islands. Blooming in spring, the flowers resemble lily of the valley. It produces an abundance of flowers and fruits; the ripe, dark purple berries are edible, with a sweet and tart flavor. The fruits can remain on the plant for over 10 months and are lightweight, remaining stable. Belonging to the genus Vaccinium, like blueberries and cranberries. Berries transition from green to red.
