In 1976, Hong Kong first minted the ten-sided five-yuan coin. One side was cast with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, who was in power at the time, and the other side was minted with the denominations of Hong Kong five dollars and Hong Kong lions. The decagonal era lion comes from a British royal lion taken from the top part of the Hong Kong emblem holding a pearl, also known as the Pearl of the Orient. However, because the decagonal shape is too easy to be stolen and cast, it only lasts for five years for circulation and use.
