Ceramic Artist Liang Shih-Chang's

Product Description

A cup of tea to greet the morning is a simple pleasure. This cup, with its glaze like misty mountain vapor and gentle rain, shifts between blues and greens, hinting at earthy ochre. The way the glaze flows suggests a moment where the sky and earth were perhaps stirred together, yielding an unexpected beauty. As your fingers trace its surface, you can feel the warmth of time. Brew a pot of tea in the morning, cradle this cup by the window, and let your thoughts drift as the steam rises. Quench your thirst midday, or enjoy a coffee to refresh your afternoon. This cup is versatile, holding anything and complementing every occasion. Its substantial yet comfortable weight fits perfectly in your palm, as if molded for the contours of your hand. The irregular rim and the subtle variations in glaze color add to its character. Much of life's beauty lies not in perfection, but in those "imperfections" that feel just right. Much like life itself, which is rarely a straight line, but rather a winding path with scenery at every turn. With a cup in hand, a good part of the day unfolds. Whether it's tea, wine, or simply water, each can be savored. This is the essence of an object meant to accompany daily life, without pretense. About the Artist Master ceramicist Liang Shih-Chang was born in Tainan in 1957. At 26, he apprenticed under the renowned pottery master Weng Kuo-Chen in Yingge, learning the art of wheel-throwing and embarking on his journey into ceramics. He has since held numerous exhibitions. His research into glazes is both deep and comprehensive, and his skillful application has repeatedly pushed the boundaries of his artistic expression, resulting in breathtaking works. In 1999, feeling creatively stagnant and uncertain of his path forward, Liang Shih-Chang took a hiatus from ceramic creation to focus on jade appraisal. It wasn't until 2021 that he felt compelled to return to pottery. He dedicated two years to familiarizing himself with glazes and producing hundreds of samples, aiming to forge a distinct style. Liang Shih-Chang's current work primarily features "glaze paintings." Drawing inspiration from nature, he adheres to a principle of using no more than two glazes—artistic and ceramic glazes. He begins by selecting glazes that best convey the intended subject, then utilizes their properties—thickness, layering, isolation, carving, marbling, or blending—to manifest his vision. Simple brushstrokes are added in appropriate places to enhance the mood of the imagery before firing. Beyond glazes, materials for his "paintings" include the crackled textures and marbled patterns of the clay body itself, as well as natural elements like leaves or minerals. Upon returning to ceramic creation, Liang Shih-Chang finds inspiration in nature and expresses his artistic ideas through glazes and clay bodies. Concepts emerge like a burst of spring shoots. "Being able to express my artistic intentions through my proficient ceramic techniques, glaze knowledge, and painting skills brings me immense joy and satisfaction. I hope this new beginning will establish my unique ceramic style."
