A Glimpse of Memory My fondness for walnut shortbread cookies stems from my grandmother. They were her favorite treat, a memory etched in time. A small neighborhood store sold them in packs of six for 40 NTD. She would carefully retrieve a bill from her coin purse, a worn-out 50 NTD note, folded in half, then in half again. I'd eagerly volunteer to buy them for her, knowing the change would be enough for a pack of Doublemint gum. Grandma's coin purse was old and small, its patterns barely discernible. It carried a faint scent of medicinal balm and menthol, much like the aroma of her clothes. Walnut shortbread was my grandmother's favorite. I like to think I was hers too.
