He gained recognition while still a student at London's Royal College of Art. Alongside classmates and senior peers such as Alan Jones and R.B. Kitaj, he participated in the 1961 "Young Contemporaries" annual exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, collectively ushering in a new aesthetic in British Pop Art. In 1964, Hockney relocated from London to Los Angeles, embarking on a period of painting inspired by Southern Californian life. His canvases depicted rolling hills, swimming pools, and modernist architecture, often infused with homoerotic undertones. Hockney also explored landscapes through various mediums, including his 1980s landscape series, Polaroid collages, 35mm color film compositions, grand-scale landscape murals, and stage set designs. More recently, he has embraced the iPad as a tool for his art, continuing his exploration of visual perception in relation to space and technology. The Tate Britain, Centre Pompidou, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art have honored Hockney with major retrospective exhibitions, celebrating his enduring artistic career. Now in his eighties, he remains a prolific creator, with his works held in the collections of esteemed institutions worldwide, including the British Museum in London, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Hayward Gallery at the Southbank Centre in London.
