about the author:
The German painter and printmaker Johann Christian Reinhart (1761-1847) is regarded as the founding figure of German Romantic landscape painting, but his golden age began in Italy. At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, many German artists who had worked in Italy used printmaking as their main creative medium, and Reiner was one of them. After the Renaissance, Italy has become a destination for artists to visit. Most of the German Romantic artists have stayed here for a long or a short time, and Leinte not only married here, but also established his artistic reputation here. In 1829, King Ludwig I of Bavaria (Ludwig I, 1786 ~ 1868) commissioned him to paint four huge Italian landscape paintings (about 170 x 270 cm), which can be imagined at the time of Reynter's fame.
Born in Hof, Bavaria, Leinter started painting in high school with the encouragement of his teacher. Originally, he followed in his father's footsteps to study theology before turning to artistic creation. In 1783, he came to Dresden, an important art town in Germany at that time, and studied under the door of Johann Christian Klengel (1751~1824), the master of early German romantic landscape art. Master's work. In 1789 he was awarded a scholarship from the Marquis of Ansbach and left Dresstown for Rome, where he remained until his death in 1847. Living in Rome, perhaps a little more free than in the small principality of Germany at the time, was where Reynter came into contact with artists from all over Europe, including many of his colleagues in his hometown. This is a positive environment where we can learn from each other, but Rinter also has to work hard to stand out in the competitive art market.
His paintings, drawings and engravings earned him a reputation and a lucrative income, and in 1801 Lainte was finally able to marry an Italian woman and start a family. After he came to Rome, he participated in the publication project of the Italian landscape prints: 【Malerisch radirte Prospecte aus Italien】(Maleerisch radirte Prospecte aus Italien) by the then Nuremberg art dealer Johann Friedrich Franenholz. The project took seven years (1792~98) and included 72 scenes of Rome and its environs. Wright and two other German printmakers, Albert Christoph Dies (1755~1822) and Ja Jacob Wilhem Mechau (1745~1808) was responsible for 24 works each. From the perspective of scale and era, this publishing project can be said to be the most important printmaking achievement at that time, and it has laid a new paradigm for landscape expression. Let people use historical events to celebrate the past and remember the present.
The importance of Leinte in the history of art lies in his ability to transform natural landscapes into idealized pictures, combining known styles, themes and shapes, and transforming them with his superb skills, giving them a heroic and sublime flavor. In addition to his 24 works in [Etching of Italian Landscapes], he also continued to create related prints, with a total of 170 pieces. As for his paintings, in addition to the four collections in the New Pinakothek in Munich today In addition to a work commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria, there are eight historical landscape paintings he completed in 1825 at the Palazzo Massimi in Rome, and other works are scattered in galleries across Europe.
Introduction of works:
Although this etching work is called "Fort Gandolfo", the protagonist Fort Gandolfo is located on a hill in the far background of the picture. The whole picture is vast and far-reaching, and the big tree in the foreground becomes the focus. Romanesque robes, judging from the flock around them, should be the shepherd. Fort Gandolfo is the summer villa of the Popes of all dynasties. It is located on Mount Albano and overlooks Lake Albano with beautiful scenery. This area is regarded as the birthplace of ancient Roman civilization. In the first century, it was the summer residence of the Roman emperors. In the twelfth century, a fortress was built here, and it has been continuously expanded. At the end of the 16th century, it was bought by the Holy See and became the Pope's vacation destination. Since then, the Popes have commissioned important architects and artists from time to time to rebuild and expand Fort Gandolfo. At this moment, Leinter is painting the beautiful scenery of this area of Fort Gandolfo, with nature as the protagonist of the picture. The shepherd in the foreground and Fort Gandolfo in the distance are like a piece of the puzzle integrated into this natural scenery. This is a testimony to the tone that seems to have remained unchanged in different historical changes from ancient Rome to the beginning of the nineteenth century: natural creation.
