The cultivated rose has been layered with petals and symbolism for so long that it is easy to forget what the original looks like: simpler, lighter, with a scent that has more of the hedge about it than the florist. A wild rose in a hedgerow in June, with its single five-petalled flower and the promise of the hip to come, is one of the uncomplicated pleasures of the temperate world. I drew the single flower and the hip beside it, the fruit that follows — the full cycle. The rose is the most symbolically loaded flower in Western culture: love, war, secrecy, political faction, religious devotion. The sub rosa tradition — keeping what is spoken under the rose — gave us the word rosette and the practice of plaster roses on ceilings in rooms where confidential matters were discussed. I drew the wild one, which carries none of it and is, as a result, simply beautiful.
