It is perhaps the most famous piece of Aztec sculpture. [1] The Stone is 358 cm (141 in) in diameter, 98 cm (39 in) thick, and weighs 24 short tons (21.4 long tons; 21.8 metric tons). [2] The sculpture was buried in its entirety in the Zocalo, Mexico City's main square, shortly after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire. The engravings on the Stone's surface refer to the central component of Mexica's cosmology.
