Along the edges of the fabric are fine, wispy fibers, reminiscent of mountain tops during pampas grass season or clusters of conifer needles. It also brings to mind the image of my friend steaming rice and cultivating koji for rice wine, the warmth of the grains and the nascent koji. The flavors and aromas of fermentation and transformation are always particularly missed. I remember asking my Japanese friend, who was making rice wine, what the most important thing was. He replied, "Wear a smile!" Simple rice, transformed through fermentation into all sorts of magically delicious creations.
