He served in the Imperial Painting Academy during the Xianfeng era (mid-19th century). He excelled at portraiture and was also skilled in painting flowers, birds, and landscapes. His artistic reputation was highly regarded, and Empress Dowager Cixi once bestowed upon him a plaque inscribed with "Master of Capturing Likeness" in her own hand. This piece is one from the "Flower Deities of December" series. It is a colored painting, depicting a peony and a root-exposed orchid, both emerging diagonally from the left edge of the frame and dancing in the breeze.
