At the end of 2024, just before preparing to fly to Korea for a meeting, a sudden lockdown was announced. It was lifted just before our flight, and after arriving safely in Korea, we found ourselves unexpectedly trapped on a subway car. Protesting crowds surged, leaving us breathless and immobile, almost suspended in the air. We kept thinking, "What do we do? Will this turn into a stampede?" We encouraged each other to stay calm, to find ways to breathe, to keep our heads up, and most importantly, to stand firm and not fall. Fortunately, after a few stops, the dense crowd disembarked at Yeouido Station, leaving us shaken and in tears. A few stops later, we exited the subway and unexpectedly stumbled upon Hyejin's exhibition. The cats' languid and serene poses instantly calmed the turbulent emotions from our recent harrowing experience. We, who had been disoriented and frightened, felt as though we had firmly returned to solid ground. It truly made us realize, from the bottom of our hearts, how wonderful it is to have cats in the world. Hyejin's cat creations are such treasures. By incorporating contemporary styles and characters, she portrays the lives and thoughts of animals within a traditional artistic framework. She utilizes Hanji, a less common paper for contemporary art, and employs fine brushwork techniques.
