Tibetan Buddhist Ritual Item Series: Longevity & Fortune Arrow

The Longevity & Fortune Arrow, known as མདའ་དར། (pronounced "Da Dar") in Tibetan, is a ritual implement in Vajrayana Buddhism. It is a sacred object used in ceremonies at Tibetan monasteries to invoke longevity and wealth. In the past, when the consort Yeshe Tsogyal accompanied Guru Rinpoche to Nepal, she witnessed the widespread poverty and illness among the local population, who were left helpless and suffering greatly. Filled with immense compassion, Mother Yeshe Tsogyal implored Guru Rinpoche for a method to alleviate their suffering. Thus, Guru Rinpoche revealed this profound and skillful means – the Longevity & Fortune Arrow. The colorful streamers attached to the arrow represent the five Dakini families: the Eastern Vajra Dakini, the Southern Jewel Dakini, the Western Lotus Dakini, the Northern Karma Dakini, and the Central Buddha Dakini. Devotionally honoring a properly blessed wealth-attracting banner can invoke auspicious blessings from all directions, including deities, nagas, and humans. It helps us gather dispersed and lost fortune, enhancing our luck in finances, career, studies, and health, ensuring smooth progress and universal peace and auspiciousness. In Tibetan households, it is customary to invite monks annually to perform longevity and fortune blessings.
