By carefully controlling the thickness of each glaze application and firing at 1260°C, the piece undergoes a 20-hour transformation in the kiln. This intense heat causes the glazes to contract and flow, creating the intricate patterns and fluid movement reminiscent of peacock feathers. The challenge in its creation lies in the precise control of glaze thickness and temperature curves. If the glaze is too thin or the temperature too low, the distinctive "peacock display" pattern will not emerge. Conversely, if the glaze is too thick or the temperature too high, it can flow onto the accompanying plate, potentially damaging both the cup and the plate. Even ambient temperature fluctuations can influence the final outcome. Despite years of dedicated practice, mastering these variables remains an ongoing pursuit, which is precisely what imbues each finished piece with its precious value.
