**A New Concept for 108-Bead Bracelets**
The traditional view of 108-bead bracelets is that they are solely for Buddhist practitioners. This perspective is quite outdated!
While 108-bead bracelets do originate from Buddhist scriptures and their length allows them to be wrapped around the wrist multiple times or worn as a necklace, their materials, designs, and decorative uses have evolved with the times. They are now more fashionable, versatile, and suitable for layering. Designers must adapt to user preferences to craft unique, customized pieces.
Furthermore, **108-bead bracelets have never been exclusively for Buddhists. Even non-Buddhists can embrace the auspicious meaning of 108 and its potential for layered styling.**
We often share with our clients that a 108-bead bracelet is an external object. Whether we are Buddhist or not, chanting scriptures or praying is primarily an internal practice. We should **not be bound or hindered by material possessions**, nor should we be fixated on the material, number of beads, how to hold them, or whether to wear them on the left or right hand.
It is best to use prayer beads for convenience and freedom. As the "Diamond Sutra" states: "All conditioned phenomena are like dreams, illusions, bubbles, and shadows; like dew drops and lightning flashes; thus they should be contemplated." Bracelets and prayer beads are also phenomena, so one should not be overly concerned with them when using them. **Comfort should always be the priority.**
**The Origin of 108 Prayer Beads**
The 108 beads represent 108 types of afflictions. Within the six sense organs—eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind—there are three types of feelings: pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral. Combined with the three qualities of good, bad, and neutral within the six sense organs, this makes 18. Adding the three realms of past, present, and future time results in 108.
The 108 afflictions signify the 108 kinds of worldly desires that sentient beings experience, which can give rise to various negative karma. Therefore, these must be severed to achieve a state of tranquility for the body and mind. Wearing prayer beads serves as a constant reminder to emulate the compassion of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, maintaining a calm and unhurried state of mind in any environment.
In Tibetan, prayer beads are called "changwa," meaning to remember, think of, or recall. It also signifies continuity. It represents the continuous remembrance of gurus, yidams, dakinis, and dharma protectors; it also signifies the continuous remembrance of gurus, yidams, dakinis, and dharma protectors towards me, bestowing blessings and wisdom.
**Lapis Lazuli**
Ancient Chinese records indicate the use of Lapis Lazuli dating back 5,000 years, while Egyptians used it even earlier, around 8,000 years ago. Chinese emperors of past dynasties used Lapis Lazuli for celestial rituals, believing its sky-blue color connected them to the heavens. Egyptians, too, believed it facilitated communication with the other world.
The finest Lapis Lazuli in the world is found in Afghanistan. Afghan Lapis Lazuli is known for its deep, commanding blue hue, earning it the reputation of "Imperial Blue."
When selecting Lapis Lazuli, look for a natural distribution of blue, white (calcite), and gold (pyrite). As Lapis Lazuli forms near the earth's surface, it has many pores and should not be exposed to water for extended periods. It is recommended to maintain it with mineral oil.
**Cloisonné (Champlevé Enamel)**
Cloisonné, scientifically known as copper-base champlevé enamel, originated in the ancient Near East. As early as the 19th century BCE, ancient Egyptian pharaohs used it to create necklaces, often combined with gemstone inlays. The Eastern Roman Empire later elevated this craft to great heights. It was introduced to China during the Yuan Dynasty and reached its zenith during the Jingtai reign of the Ming Dynasty, hence its name "Jingtai Blue."
Exquisite cloisonné pieces are characterized by their lustrous and vibrant colors, substantial and solid bases, neat and uniform wirework, and brilliant gilding. They embody the warmth of jade, the radiance of jewels, and the delicacy of porcelain. Consequently, the cloisonné process is intricate and costly.
**Blue Chalcedony**
Blue Chalcedony is currently the most precious gemstone produced in Taiwan, known as "Taiwan Blue Gem."
The color of Blue Chalcedony varies from deep blue to light blue, or even blue with a yellowish tint, which is a primary factor influencing its price. Vibrant, evenly distributed colors with no impurities are rare, naturally commanding a higher value.
When selecting Blue Chalcedony, prioritize pieces with fewer internal cracks and a uniform, fine-grained texture.
**The Six-Syllable Mantra**
The Six-Syllable Mantra (Om Mani Padme Hum) originates from Sanskrit and consists of six Tibetan syllables: Oṃ Maṇi Padme Hūṃ. It is the most commonly recited mantra in Buddhism.
This mantra contains the boundless blessings and compassion of all Buddhas. It is the audible manifestation of their compassion and wisdom, possessing profound meaning and infinite wonder. It embodies immense power, great wisdom, and profound compassion within the universe. Reciting it regularly brings immeasurable merit and benefits.
Each syllable of Om Mani Padme Hum carries a distinct meaning:
**Oṃ (嗡) - Dispels arrogance; purifies ego-clinging.**
Represents the Buddha family's heart, symbolizing the white wisdom of equanimity, eliminating ego-clinging and arrogance. It also represents the Buddha's mind, embodying the Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya, and Nirmanakaya—the wisdom body, speech, and mind of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.
**Ma (嘛) - Dispels jealousy; purifies envy.**
Represents the green wisdom light, purifying envy in the Asura realm and eliminating the suffering of conflict among non-human beings.
**ṇi (呢) - Dispels greed; purifies ignorance.**
Represents the yellow self-originated wisdom light, eliminating the suffering of birth, aging, sickness, and death in the human realm, and purifying ignorance and greed in the human realm.
**Pad (唄) - Dispels foolishness; purifies delusion.**
Represents the blue wisdom light of the Dharmadhatu's nature, eliminating the suffering of labor and servitude in the animal realm and dispelling foolishness.
**Me (美) - Dispels stinginess; purifies miserliness.**
Represents the red wisdom light of wondrous observation, eliminating the suffering of hunger and thirst for hungry ghosts and purifying miserliness in the hungry ghost realm.
**Hūṃ (吽) - Dispels anger; purifies hatred.**
Represents the Vajra family's heart, symbolizing the black-blue mirror-like wisdom light, eliminating the suffering of cold and hot hells and dispelling hatred.
Regularly chanting the Six-Syllable Mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum, can eliminate the six afflictions of greed, anger, ignorance, arrogance, jealousy, and stinginess, transcend the cycle of rebirth, and attain enlightenment in the Pure Land.

**◈ On Use and Care**
1. Natural gemstones possess natural luster and unique textures (tiny black spots, stone lines, ice cracks, cloudiness, mineral inclusions, asymmetry, etc.). As you wear them frequently, you will observe subtle color changes in the natural gemstones, which often become more translucent and captivating—this is the best form of maintenance.
Natural organic gemstones (like coral and amber) have low hardness and are sensitive to acids and alkalis. When dirty, avoid using detergents. Clean with plain water and wipe with a soft cloth. You can also use a soft brush dipped in a small amount of mineral oil (like baby oil) for gentle polishing and care.
2. Metal jewelry has a long lifespan. Avoid external damage or strong acids and alkalis that can cause fading.
3. Fabric materials (ribbons, cotton, gauze) are soft and comfortable to the touch and have a long lifespan. Avoid high temperatures, external damage, or strong acids and alkalis that can cause fading.
4. For jewelry of any material, when dirty, wipe with a soft cloth dampened with water as appropriate, or use a suitable amount of neutral detergent for suitable materials. After washing, dry promptly.
5. When jewelry is removed, store it properly in packaging to block excess air and slow down oxidation and discoloration. Avoid stacking or pressing.
