Yirgacheffe Banko Gotiti G1
Ethiopia's coffee is primarily categorized into eight major growing regions: Lekempti, Limu, Illubabor, Djimma, Teppi/Bebeka, and three regions particularly renowned and beloved in Taiwan – Yirgacheffe, Harrar, and Sidamo.
Most Ethiopian coffee varieties are Heirloom, meaning indigenous, as their name suggests, these are superior breeds passed down from ancient ancestors.
In 1971, a large-scale Coffee Berry Disease (CBD) outbreak occurred, affecting coffee cherries from their early stages. Pests and diseases infiltrated the fruit, damaging the seeds. This resulted in losses exceeding 70%, and sometimes even reaching 80%. Consequently, the Jimma Agricultural Research Center (JARC) initiated a crucial research project. The results were named using the year and a serial number, leading to the origin of the 74 and 75 series varieties. 74 and 75 represent 1974 and 1975, with the last three digits indicating the serial number.
The project began in [Year - implied from context], with the goal of identifying varieties effective against Coffee Berry Disease (CBD). A broad survey collected a total of 639 tree samples from 19 locations in southwestern Ethiopia for field and laboratory testing. After repeated experiments, 13 varieties were adopted, all effective against CBD and exhibiting distinct citrus flavors and delicate floral notes. Among these was 74110, which has frequently appeared in past Ethiopian COE competitions, becoming a hallmark of champions, and its flavors are well-known for their floral and citrus aromas.
The Banko Gotiti washing station is located in the prime area of Gediyo town, the southeasternmost part of Yirgacheffe. In earlier years, this region was exported under the name Wotee. However, in recent years, there has been an increasing emphasis on single-source traceability. In 2012, it separated from the larger Wotee cooperative, ensuring greater authenticity in its origin. The vast majority of coffee trees are planted on slopes at altitudes of 2000 meters. From the appearance of the green beans, their consistency, freshness, aroma, and flavor are all exceptional. Beyond its rich aromatic profile, the average temperature in this high-altitude region ranges from 15-25°C, leading to a slower drying process that takes longer than in typical regions, further stabilizing the quality of the green beans.
