**The Tarpan Horse**
Also known as the Tarpan (from Turkic languages), the European wild horse was a prehistoric equine primarily found from southern France and eastern Spain to central Russia. The horses depicted in the Lascaux cave paintings in France are believed to be Tarpans. Many scholars suggest the Tarpan is the ancestor of modern domesticated horses, while others believe they were the same species.
In the 19th century, due to extensive grassland development and overhunting, the wild Tarpan went extinct in Ukraine in 1876. In 1880, the last captive Tarpan died at the Moscow Zoo in Russia. For a long time, scientists have strived to revive the Tarpan, leading to the development of breeds like the Heck horse and the Konik Polski. While these horses share many similarities with the Tarpan, they are not true Tarpans.
**IUCN Status: Extinct (EX)**

- Though we never had the chance to witness these creatures firsthand, they once roamed the Earth. These animals were once powerful and magnificent, only to be driven to extinction by humankind. Imagine how desolate our planet would become if we fail to learn from the past and allow all wild animals to vanish, leaving only livestock confined to fences and cages.
