Thank you for your understanding. Ferocactus horridus, commonly known as the Hohokam cactus or fishhook cactus, is a succulent belonging to the Ferocactus genus of the Cacti family. It's a medium to large globular cactus that grows slowly, requiring patient care. The plant has a bluish-green body with a thick epidermis. Young plants are spherical, maturing into a cylindrical shape, with mature specimens reaching up to 80cm in diameter and over a meter in height. Native to Mexico, it thrives in warm, dry, and sunny environments. It's quite cold-hardy and drought-tolerant but dislikes waterlogging. It prefers fertile, lime-rich, well-draining sandy loam soil. Avoid temperatures below 5°C in winter. Most of its spines are red, though some varieties have yellow spines. The spines are generally thick, long, and rigid, with the central hooked spines being a particular highlight. Flowers are primarily red or yellow, blooming near the growing point. A unique characteristic is the secretion of nectar near the areoles, appearing as a clear, viscous liquid that can become sticky over time. If you're concerned about its appearance or attracting pests (like ants or red spiders), you can rinse the nectar off with water. It's said that Ferocactus horridus rarely blooms, sometimes only once a decade, and due to its slow growth, it's uncommon to see it mature into its columnar form. This short-spined specimen boasts a rugged, handsome form. Its deep green, smooth, yet subtly textured spherical body features charmingly regular, raised ribs. The areoles are adorned with clusters of brown fuzz, from which sprout small yellow spines, interspersed with a few deep red ones. The overall impression is sharp and stylish! | Sunlight | Prefers warm, dry, and sunny conditions. Full sun is ideal. During peak summer heat, provide slight shade if necessary, but prolonged shading can dull the cactus's spine color, affecting its aesthetic appeal. | Watering | During the growing seasons of spring and summer, water thoroughly. Follow the principle of "water only when dry, and water thoroughly when you do," ensuring no waterlogging in the pot after watering. Water approximately once a week. Keep the soil dry during winter; it can tolerate brief periods of low temperatures down to 3°C. During cold snaps, you may temporarily move the plant indoors for protection. | Fertilizing | Apply a diluted liquid fertilizer or a balanced compound fertilizer low in nitrogen and high in phosphorus and potassium once a month.
