Death Valley is the hottest and driest place in the US, the lowest point below sea level, and about one-third the size of Taiwan. During the 19th-century Gold Rush, everyone headed west to California seeking gold. One person suggested a shortcut, and many families followed, only to become trapped in the scorching lowlands surrounded by mountains. Although rescuers eventually arrived, one person died before help could reach them, leading to the name Death Valley (how unlucky).
