As I bid you farewell beneath the cherry blossoms, my heart, an inch of spring, follows the broken branches.
Where longing is most felt after parting, a thousand trees and ten thousand petals hang, encircling the woods.
— Tang Dynasty, Yuan Zhen, "Offering a Sprig of Flowers for Departure"
【A Little Plant Knowledge】Taiwan Endemic Species - Alishan Cherry Blossom
◆ Scientific Name: Prunus transarisanensis
◆ Distribution: High-altitude regions of the main island
◆ Appearance: Flowers bloom in clusters of 2-3, with colors ranging from white, off-white, to pink. The flowers are medium to large, with relatively long pedicels.
◆ Characteristics: According to agricultural research in Taiwan, the genetic diversity within the Alishan Cherry Blossom species is higher than that of peach, plum, Taiwan cherry, and Wushe cherry.
【Scientific Principle】Shrink Plastic
◆ Thermoplastic
These plastics have a chain-like or branched molecular structure. Their molecules can move freely at high temperatures. During heating, the components do not undergo a chemical reaction but soften and deform. Therefore, they can be repeatedly heated to soften and melt, solidifying upon cooling. Most single-use plastic food containers and packaging are made from thermoplastic materials, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) used for packaging films and fresh-keeping boxes.
◆ Thermosetting Plastic
These plastics have a cross-linked network structure formed through bridging reactions. Before molding into a finished product, they are heated, undergoing irreversible chemical reactions like vulcanization. Once molded, even reheating cannot change their shape. Only specific plastic food containers and packaging use thermosetting plastics. Common examples include polycarbonate (PC) used for making water bottles, or polyether sulfones (PES) used for manufacturing high-temperature resistant containers for tableware, medical devices, and electronic components.
We utilize the properties of shrink plastic, a thermoplastic, which shrinks and thickens upon heating. By adjusting the heating time with a heat gun, we shape the petals to be thicker at the tips and thinner at the edges, and heat them to soften and curve.
