Young sunflowers follow the sun from east to west each day, returning overnight to face east again, in a movement called solar tracking or heliotropism. But once the head is fully developed and the seeds are setting, the movement stops. The choice of east is not random: a sunflower facing the morning receives more pollinator visits because bees prefer warmer flowers, and the east-facing head warms up first. I drew it from slightly above and in front, to show both the disc florets at the centre and the ray florets — the "petals" — radiating outward. The disc florets are the actual flowers, hundreds of them, spiralling outward in the Fibonacci patterns found in many plants. The ray florets are sterile — they exist only to attract pollinators. The whole construction is a compound flower head masquerading as a single flower. The sunflower (*Helianthus annuus*) originates in North America, where it was a significant crop plant for Native American peoples before European contact. It was brought to Europe in the 16th century and gradually adopted as an oil seed, eventually becoming one of the most important oilseed crops in the world.
