[ The Blue Train ] The Taiwan Railways Blue Express, which once ran between Fangliao and Taitung, is known as "Taiwan's Oldest Train." Renowned for its stunning coastal and mountain scenery along the route, it earned the affectionate nickname "The Train that Melts Worries." The Blue Express, powered by a diesel-electric locomotive, gets its name from its distinctive blue carriages. Lacking air conditioning, passengers relied on ceiling fans or open windows to catch the sea breeze. In the past, it departed Fangliao every morning, traveled to Taitung, and returned to Fangliao, showcasing a panorama of mountains and seascapes, including views of the Taiwan Strait and the Pacific Ocean. Riding this train felt like stepping back in time, hence its moniker, "The Train that Melts Worries." The train ceased operations at the end of December 2020, with the electrification of the railway lines. Many railway enthusiasts, saddened by the absence of the Blue Express, initiated a petition on the National Development Council's Public Policy Online Participation Platform to request its return. Following refurbishment by Taiwan Railways, it was scheduled to resume service in October 2021.
