_Etching
A type of gravure printing that first adds an acid-resistant protective layer to a metal plate, and then engraves the pattern on the surface to expose the metal underneath. When a metal plate is placed in an acid bath, the exposed nicks will be corroded by the acid. After the protective layer is washed off, the pattern will be scored on the board, ready for ink to be applied and printed with a printer. There are no burrs in the etched lines, and the lines of the finished product are crisp and clear, unlike direct-engraved prints. Author: Nandor Lajos Varga (1895-1978).
