1. Material Selection
The cowhide currently used by "Cut Line School" is all A-grade, high-fat vegetable-tanned leather from Italy. As it is a natural material and the tannery uses vegetable tanning, a process that causes minimal damage to the leather, the surface may inevitably bear some "scars," "wrinkles," or "veins." We endeavor to avoid these or place them on less visible or non-load-bearing parts of the product during cutting.
2. Hand-Stitched Seams
Our products are not made using sewing machines; all stitching is done entirely by hand. Before stitching, special diamond chisels are used to punch out the stitch holes on the leather. This technique allows for the creation of beautiful, wavy seam lines, distinguishing them from machine stitching. Although this significantly increases production time, it is a crucial step where artisans imbue the leather goods with soul and a warm, tactile feel.
3. Hand-Burnished Edges
Before a product is finished, the edges are burnished and sealed. This is done to give the edges a smooth, rounded, and natural appearance. "Cut Line School" has its own unique edge-finishing method. First, sandpaper is used to repeatedly smooth the sharp edges of the leather. Then, an edge-sealing liquid is applied to create a level surface, repeated 2-3 times. This is followed by a layer of edge-sealing wax, and then the edges are repeatedly polished with a burnishing tool until they achieve a smooth finish.
4. Hand-Dyed Leather
For its hand-dyed products, "Cut Line School" currently uses imported Fiebing's leather alcohol dyes from the USA. To achieve a uniform and natural color, we first dampen the leather surface with water. Then, the dye is applied repeatedly with a sponge, progressing from light to dark until the desired color is achieved. After drying, a color-fixative is applied to enhance colorfastness. Finally, the surface is wiped with clean water to remove any dust and further even out the color.
Because the dyeing process is entirely manual, subtle variations in color exist between each bag, making every piece unique.
