**Kikuchi's Gecko**
Also known as the Lanyu gecko, Kikuchi's Gecko is endemic to Lanyu Island and is Taiwan's largest native gecko species. It is rarely seen and its numbers are scarce. The Tao people of Lanyu believe that hearing a gecko's call signifies impending misfortune, but hearing it during the flying fish season promises a bountiful harvest.
Kikuchi's Gecko can grow up to 20 centimeters long. It is characterized by numerous tuberculate scales on its back, pairs of black spots, and it lays two connected eggs at a time.
In recent years, Taiwan has been invaded by the introduced Spotted House Gecko, which resembles Kikuchi's Gecko in appearance. This has led to a decline in many native small gecko populations. If its distribution continues to spread, even the largest Kikuchi's Gecko may face competition and displacement.
**IUCN Status: Data Deficient (DD)**
